OIL PULLING
What is Oil Pulling?
Oil Pulling is a safe, simple, cheap and gentle procedure whose benefits range from bringing health to your mouth and ridding you of harmful toxins and bacteria, to a method that history tells us can prevent disease and extend the quality of life.
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of solid oil in the mouth for a set time and then spitting the now liquified oil into the garbage. This action has the ability to adhere to toxins which are "pulled" from the blood stream via mucous membranes or trapped bacteria from dental work, between teeth or where the average tooth brush misses time after time. The therapy is simple and completely harmless. Modern day science has found adding a drop or two of essential oils really ramps it up a notch. See specific essential oil recommendations below.
Oil pulling was practiced in Ayurvedic medicine and has since been introduced in 1992 by Dr. F. Karach, MD. Dr. Karach claimed that this treatment will achieve remarkable results with illnesses across the board. Dr. Karach claims that oil pulling heals the whole body in perpetuity.
According to the African Journal of Microbiology Research, oil pulling is an effective defense against the bacteria associated with dental caries (tooth decay). Studies show that it has also been beneficial in the elimination of bleeding gums, the fastening of loose teeth and the visible whitening of the teeth.
More and more studies and successes are finding higher quality oils like Virgin Coconut Oil provide the most effective results. The anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties of whole, extra virgin coconut oil make it the perfect choice for oil pulling. (Coconut oil is best Unrefined but quality refined will do, as long as it is the SOLID Coconut Oil).
Does maintaining a healthy mouth help you have a healthy body?
The answer is yes!
Up-and-coming science suggests that advanced gum disease can be linked to many major diseases and illnesses. Diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and pre-term birth just to name a few.
The Early stages of gum disease is gingivitis-which affects a majority of all adults at some point in their lives, and most don’t even know it.
Halitosis (bad breath) is often a sign of a more serious problem in your mouth. Poor oral hygiene and gum disease are the primary causes of halitosis.
During the oil-pulling process one’s metabolism is intensified. Many feel this leads to improved health as well.
Many theories exist and more studies are happening daily to explore the connection between good oral health and overall health. All these conclusions leading us to the knowledge that a healthy mouth can ONLY lead to a healthier YOU.
Can essential oils help with oral care?
Absolutely.
Essential oils can be used as a daily oral care routine that includes brushing, flossing and oil pulling using oils with anti-septic and anti-bacterial properties.
Exactly how do you do it?
It's extremely simple!
Prior to breakfast on an empty stomach or at night before bed (my preferred time) take one tablespoon of coconut oil and add a few drops of an essential oil on the spoon and put it into your mouth (beginners start at a teaspoon for 5-10 minute and work up to a Tablespoon for 20 minutes). Swish the blend through your teeth slowly along with "chewing" motions and it will liquify (do not microwave or cook the blend to liquify as that will forfeit the quality of the process). DO NOT SWALLOW! This process thoroughly mixes the oils with your saliva. Swishing activates the enzymes and the enzymes in the mouth which draw toxins out of the blood. Again, the oil must not be swallowed as it has become toxic. You will then spit it from the mouth into the trash NOT the drain, and thoroughly wash your mouth (I personally rinse with water and brush with OnGuard toothpaste).
Oil pulling can be done daily or at least every other day to achieve these benefits. To accelerate the healing process, it can be repeated multiple times a day, but it is always best before meals and on an empty stomach due to gag reflex and interruption of digestive enzyme activity.
For many, the instant results of this process is the fastening of loose teeth, the healing of sores, the elimination of bleeding gums and the visible whitening of the teeth.
**Remember, do not swallow and spit into the garbage - will clog sink!
